Adapted from the Presbyterian Book of Worship for those in medical service
Merciful God: by Your power people are healed. May we be thankful for every sign of health that You give, and humble before the mystery of Your mending grace. Give strength to those of us who will staff hospitals, homes for the ill and aged, and community pharmacies. Make us brave, trusting in Your power to support us and our patients during times of pain and sadness and death. Guide our professional decisions, and help us to make choices through faith. We thank You for the gifts You have given us which enable us to be part of the profession of pharmacy; make us mindful of this always. Help us to support our brothers and sisters who have committed themselves to faith-based practice. Enable us, Your servants, to share the love You have given us with those we will serve. Through Your Son Jesus Christ we pray, Amen
Charles Troutman (an pioneer of IVCF in the 1930s) wrote, "There is no place like the university for the sharpening and expansion of Christian faith." Here is a prayer he wrote in 1960 which brings that grand vision down to each individual's desk.
O Sovereign Lord, Almighty Father, Creator of heaven and earth bring to this desk the information I need. Lighten my darkness and by thy great mercy cause me to perceive accurately. Deliver me from hidden insincerities, from betrayal or flattery of friends, from cowardice and laziness, from arrogance and inaction. Grant thy Spirit to guard my tongue that no words of mine may be unfit for the present need. Then take my very best and make it good enough for thee. Amen
When our lives become more hectic and intense with the pressure of papers and exams the need for prayer seems more obvious even if it is harder to come by. I commend this one to you. It has survived the test of time. You may wish to offer this prayer each time you sit to study. - Jeff Barneson
by St. Thomas Aquinas
Ineffable Creator, Who, from the treasures of Your wisdom, has established three hierarchies of angels, has arrayed them in marvelous order above the fiery heavens, and has marshaled the regions of the universe with such artful skill.
You are proclaimed the true font of light and wisdom, and the primal origin raised high beyond all things.
Pour forth a ray of Your brightness into the darkened places of my mind; disperse from my soul the twofold darkness into which I was born: sin and ignorance.
You make eloquent the tongues of infants. Refine my speech and pour forth upon my lips the goodness of Your blessing.
Grant to me keenness of mind, capacity to remember, skill in learning, subtlety to interpret, and eloquence in speech.
May You guide the beginning of my work, direct its progress, and bring it to completion.
You Who are true God and true Man, Who live and reign, world without end.
Amen
